Learn how to get smiles on their faces and make class enjoyable!
Have you ever heard of those teachers everybody wants to have?
You know…the ones that seem to make class so enjoyable their students actually leave with smiles on their faces. In this blog, I’m going to show you how to make your classes enjoyable so you can start to see REAL smiles on the faces of your students.
Let’s just get right to it.
Audiences and classrooms alike respond best to an instructor who is sincere and genuine. In other words, they don’t like it when you’re being FAKE. They find it most enjoyable WHEN YOU ARE BEING YOURSELF.
The way to get there is through endearment. If you can get the audience to be endeared to you, then you will be on your way to making class more enjoyable. Some people don’t even realize this is what they are referring to when they say – “get them in the palm of your hand”.
As you learn to be more YOURSELF and get your audience to see you as a REAL person, they will find your class more enjoyable. It’s all about your personality and the ways to harness it in order to genuinely make things more enjoyable in your room.
Here’s how to do it.
The first thing you need to do is HAVE FUN. How do you have fun in your everyday life? I don’t mean ‘fake fun’. I mean REAL FUN.
What makes you sincerely smile? What makes you genuinely enjoy life, people, situations and the world? You need to be able to answer those questions.
I’ll give you an example. Personally, I tend to be a very FEELING person. I enjoy meeting the needs of others and one of my favorite ways to do that is to tell stories about myself. I can do that either as a person or as an instructor…
…it doesn’t matter as long as the stories are genuine, applicable to the topic at hand, and beneficial to the audience hearing them.
I’m not much of a performer, so even though that technique may work for some presenters, it can come across as fake if I do it. I need to stay genuine and performing won’t do that for me…but STORIES…well, I LOVE to tell THEM.
Did you notice when I shared something about myself, I immediately became more REAL to you? That’s what YOU can do as well. SHARE SOMETHING about yourself – personally or professionally, whatever shows them you are a REAL PERSON…not just an instructor or presenter.
How to Enjoy Class More YOURSELF
What do YOU love to do? My brother Jim, for example, is an amazing presenter and instructor in his own right, but he is very different from me. He has a different style, but he’s very effective. Like me, he doesn’t like to perform. He does, however, enjoy getting OTHERS to perform and have fun and then feeds off of the laughter that comes about from that encounter.
He can get audience members to share with the class or the group. When people share information about themselves and are having fun in his presence, he or she GENUINELY enjoys himself or herself!
Guess what that does for the class? That’s right! THE CLASS enjoys THEMSELVES more because HE OR SHE is enjoying HIMSELF OR HERSELF more…. the effect just continues to snowball. (Caution! – It can snowball for the worse too).
You see, it’s not your style that makes you enjoyable…it’s how you use your style. It’s whether it’s a GENUINE style. THAT’s what makes you enjoyable.
Here’s something to remember…YOUR CLASS WILL NOT ENJOY THEMSELVES UNLESS YOU ARE ENJOYING YOURSELF, and you can’t be fake.
I have a buddy who is a professional trainer. He’s totally the opposite of Jim. Remember how Jim doesn’t like to perform? Well, this guy LOVES to perform. He actually gets his classes to BEG him to do cartwheels for them. Some classes have even asked him to show them his rendition of Danny in the musical Grease.
Unlike me, when he does, it actually FEEDS his energy rather than DRAINS it. Here’s a way to tell whether you are GENUINELY enjoying yourself…IF IT FEEDS YOUR ENERGY RATHER THAN DRAINS YOUR ENERGY, THEN YOU KNOW.
I can help you determine ways that can make class more enjoyable based on WHAT FEEDS YOU. I’ll tell you how you can find that out in a moment based on your style. But first, it’s important to know YOU may already know some of this about yourself.
Try something for me…take 10 minutes and write down all the things you enjoy doing in your everyday life outside the classroom. Then, take about 10 minutes more and write a description that summarizes what they all have in common. You may be surprised at what you find out…
